Table 1 illustrates how most people would naturally classify the shapes and colours of four pairs of shoes. There are two pairs each in Table 1 . All are black soled with white sides and fabrics: one pair each in high and low heels. Figure 1 illustrates one pair from Table 1 .

Most people would naturally classify the four pairs of shoes in Table 1 into three classes corresponding to the three major colours or soles [or both].

Most people would also naturally classify the four pairs into two shapes. The first class of “shapes” includes two non-existent shapes, but are obvious enough to most readers that they can verify types and colour combinations match in Figure 2 . The second class of “shapes” corresponds to actual shoes.

Anthropologists would classify each pair of shoes into one of four types. These are illustrated in Table 2. These four types are typically called “shoe types” with appropriate adjectives such as high-heeled or flat-heeled, but the names are arbitrary and could be replaced by others.

The four types illustrated in Table 2 corresponds to the same number of pairs illustrated in Figure 1. These are “TYPE II” or “TYPE III” but are not numbered here for brevity. These types can also be called “shoe classes” which is inappropriate because the term refers to a teaching method.
